SEIU Withdraws Petition to Represent La Verne Adjunct Faculty

July 31, 2014 –The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has withdrawn its petition to represent adjunct faculty at the University of La Verne. In accepting the withdrawal, the National Labor Relations Board imposed a six-month moratorium against the SEIU, preventing it from filing another petition to represent La Verne adjunct faculty until January of 2015. Read More >

National NLRB Denies SEIU Appeal

July 18, 2014 – The National Labor Relations Board has dismissed all charges of unfair labor practices against the University. SEIU had filed six Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges against the University. The regional office of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) investigated and dismissed these charges. The SEIU then filed an appeal on one of these charges with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., delaying the ballot count. Now that all ULP charges have been dismissed and the appeals process has been exhausted, the impounded ballots can be counted. Read More >

SEIU Appeals NLRB's Decision

May 5, 2014 – We have just learned that on April 28, 2014, the SEIU filed an appeal to the Regional Director’s dismissal of one of the unfair labor practice charges previously filed against the University. The appeal was filed with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, DC. It may take a month or more before the Board responds to SEIU’s appeal. As a result of the SEIU making this appeal—the ballots will remain impounded. Read More >

NLRB Dismisses All ULP Charges

April 16, 2014 – The National Labor Relations Board has dismissed all six of the unfair labor practice (ULP) charges that the union filed against the University — in their entirety. The Board concluded that the Union’s allegations have no merit. This decision confirms that the University ran a fair and lawful communications effort. Read More >

Election Continues To Be On Hold

April 7, 2014 – On February 7, 2014 — one week into the voting period — the Union asked the Regional Director of the National Labor Relations Board to block the pending election. On February 21, the Region granted that request and impounded the ballots that had been submitted by adjunct faculty members. The University immediately filed a Request for Review, asking the Board in D.C. to overturn the Regional Director’s decision and order the ballots counted. On April 4, 2014, the Board in D.C. denied the Request for Review. Read More >

University Calls on Union to Support Vote Count; Files Petition Refuting Charges

March 15, 2014 – The University continues to advocate for the votes to be counted and calls on the SEIU to drop its opposition to the counting of the ballots so the adjuncts’ voice may be heard. In a recent submission to the NLRB Regional Director on February 26, the University asked that it reconsider its support of the SEIU’s request to impound the ballots. Read More >

University Urges NLRB to Count Ballots

March 3, 2013 - The University last week filed a request with the Director of Region 21 of the NLRB asking that the ballots be counted while the union’s unfair labor practice charges are investigated. The University continues to maintain that the union’s allegations are without merit and should not be allowed to delay the vote count. The University believes that the ballots should be counted as soon as possible; however, the decision lies with the Board. Read More >

SPECIAL ELECTION UPDATE – University Files Motion to Deny Union’s Appeal; Regional Director Reverses Decision

February 22, 2014 - On Friday, February 21, the University filed a motion with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in Washington, D.C. to deny the SEIU’s appeal to impound the ballots cast in the adjunct faculty’s union election. In a separate action, the Regional Director reversed its earlier decision to allow the election to proceed and without waiting for the NLRB’s input decided the ballots should remain impounded until the union’s ULPs are reviewed. Read More >

SPECIAL ELECTION UPDATE – NLRB Denies Inclusivity; University Calls for Vote Count

February 19, 2014 - Today we received notification that the NLRB in Washington D.C. has denied the University's appeal of the decision limiting the eligible voting unit to main campus adjuncts. We are disappointed that our inclusive approach has been rejected. However, this decision should pave the way for the ballots, which have been cast and returned to the NLRB Regional Office, to be promptly opened and counted. Read More >

SPECIAL ELECTION UPDATE – UNIVERSITY SUPPORTS VOTE COUNT

February 17, 2014 - Please be advised that the Regional Director of the NLRB on February 14, 2014, notified the University and the SEIU that it was postponing the counting of the ballots in the election until further notice. The Director informed both parties that the postponement was because the National Board in Washington, D.C. has not yet decided on the University’s appeal to include Regional-Campus adjuncts in the bargaining unit. As such, the mail-in ballots will not be counted at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 as originally scheduled. Read More >

February 5, 2014 - Eligible voters should receive their ballot from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) by today, Wednesday, February 5. If you have not received your ballot, please call the NLRB today at (213) 894-5200 and request a duplicate ballot. Remember, for a vote to count, it must be received by the NLRB office by close of business at 5:00 p.m. PST on Friday, February 14. January 17, 2014 - A series of short video testimonials—with messages from President Lieberman, Interim Provost Reed, and the Deans of each college—highlight the University's recent progress and their hope that adjunct faculty will give them a chance to do great things together. NLRB Decides Election Dates

January 14, 2014 - Today the NLRB set the dates for the mail ballot election for adjuncts who are eligible to vote in the secret ballot election. The NLRB will mail election instructions and the secret ballot to the homes of eligible voters on Friday, January 31, 2014. NLRB Decides Voter Eligibility

December 19, 2013 – The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued their decision about voter eligibility for the secret ballot election. As stated in their ruling, “all part-time faculty, including department associates, employed by the Employer who teach one or more for-credit class(es), lesson(s), or lab(s) at the Employer’s main campus,” and were employed during the payroll period ending December 15, 2013. Read More >

The University of La Verne Advocates Greater Adjunct Inclusion In A Union Election

The University of La Verne advocated before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) a position of inclusion to expand the proposed bargaining unit because we are mindful of the part-time faculty who teach at our regional campuses. The University does not believe the part-time faculty is best represented by limiting the bargaining unit to those who teach on the main campus as proposed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in its initial petition. Read More >
